Hurricane Sandy deadly storm emergency preparations

The U.S. East Coast ramped up emergency preparations on Saturday for Hurricane Sandy, a monstrous and deadly storm that forecasters said could severely impact cities and towns with heavy flooding and fierce winds.
Sandy moved slowly off the coast of South Carolina as a Category 1 storm, having left at least 45 dead in its wake in the Caribbean and Central America. It is expected to begin seriously affecting heavily populated coastal areas in the East as early as Sunday.
Residents from North Carolina to New England sandbagged low lying areas, secured and fortified homes and buildings, and packed stores to stock up on bottled water, food, and batteries in anticipation of widespread power outages.

Several states declared emergencies and accelerated storm preparations. New Jersey was the first to announce mandatory evacuations.
"We have to prepare for the worst here," Gov. Chris Christie said.
The state's barrier islands from Sandy Hook south to Cape May must be cleared out by Sunday afternoon. Those at Atlantic City casinos also must leave by then.
The biggest threat scenario involves the hurricane colliding with a cold front from the West, creating a "superstorm" that could stall over the Eastern seaboard for days. Residents have been asked to prepare for the possibility of a week or more without power.
CNN Weather estimates that damage from Sandy could reach $3.2 billion. This estimate is based only on wind damage and does not include flooding.
The District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia New Jersey, North Carolina and New York have declared states of emergency, while Maine's governor signed a limited emergency declaration. Delaware's governor has said the state will issue a mandatory evacuation of its coastline, if the storm stays on path.
Sandy will be studied for years to come, said Louis Uccellini, who is responsible for environmental prediction at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
How is Sandy expected to develop?
Weather forecasters still predict it will push in a large storm surge as it nears land, inundate a broad, highly populated region with rain and impact utility service.
"Forget about the category with this," said CNN meteorologist Rob Marciano. "When you have trees with leaves on them still, this kind of wind and rain on top of that, you're talking about trees that are going to come down, power lines are going to be out and the coastal flooding situation is going to be huge."

Kate Middleton, Prince William sue over topless pictures

rench magazine Closer dared to publish topless photos of Kate Middleton and Prince William taken while the couple were sunbathing in privacy. The couple has begun a lawsuit.

OOH, LA LA.
Topless photos of comely Kate Middleton sunbathing in France roiled the royals Friday as she and her hubby Prince William were trying to make a good impression in buttoned-up Malaysia.
The blurry but still-sexy snaps, taken poolside last week during “a very hot holiday” at a chateau in the Provence region, also showed Prince William applying sunscreen to the Duchess of Cambrige’s regal derriere.
Outraged, Buckingham Palace called it a “grotesque” invasion of privacy and the couple announced it would sue the popular French gossip magazine Closer, which posted the photos.

Kate Middleton Put Us at Two for Three on Royal Nudie Pic Scandals

French magazine Closer just published some photos of Kate Middleton sunbathing topless while "staying at the French chateau of the Queen's nephew, Lord Linley — making it now two royal nudie picture scandals in three weeks. Click though for some NSFW scans.
The photographer who shot them apparently tried to sell them in England, but no one in the British media — which tend to avoid embarrassing the royals for fear of having their access cut off — would bite. Closer did, and published the pics today:
On the magazine's website, it says the pictures are of the couple "like you have never seen them before. Gone are the fixed smiles and the demure dresses. On holiday Kate forgets everything."
(You have to say it in a French accent to really get the full effect.)
According to the BBC, the couple, who learned about the photos while in Malaysia yesterday, is considering the possibility of bringing a lawsuit against the photographers or the magazine, and the British press is up in arms — The Telegraph calls the paparazzi "grinning perverts." All in all, though, isn't this the classy way to have your privacy invaded? Instead of, you know, being surreptitiously photographed by a fellow nude billiards player?

Foo Fighters not done with touring

During the alt-rock titans Foo Fighters' show headlining the Reading Festival in England on Monday night, singer Dave Grohl almost gave some fans a heart attack. "Well, well, well, the ... Reading Festival," he said onstage. "You guys realize we've got a lot of songs to play. It's the last show of the tour and it's the last show for a long time."
Apparently, some fans and reports misunderstood that as the Foos' last show forever, and news quickly spread that the band had called it quits at Reading.  While Reading would hypothetically be an apropos place to call it off -- Monday night was the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's legendary set there -- it doesn't appear to be the case.
The band has at least three shows impending -- a Rock the Vote appearance at the Democratic National Convention on Sept. 5, and then two festivals in Atlanta and Pensacola, Fla., later that month.
And for what it's worth, the Foos' official tour schedule site still features a large banner saying, "We are coming for you too. More shows being added here soon."
The Reading set was mammoth -- 26 songs, including the live rarities "Alone + Easy Target," "Exhausted" and a rousing "Happy Birthday" rendition to Grohl's mom. But fans worried that they just missed the last Foo Fighters show ever can resume normal breathing.

Eighteen years ago in Seattle, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl decided to form a new band after the death of singer Kurt Cobain. Today, the Foo Fighters are regarded as one of the greatest (and one of the most seismologically intense) rock bands of the new millennium.
But on Sunday, Grohl told the crowd at the 2012 Reading Festival that the performance marked the Foo Fighters' "last show for a long time."
"Well, well, well. The f--king Reading festival. You guys [realize] we've got a lot of songs to play. It's the last show of the tour and it's the last show for a long time," Grohl said, according to NME.

Ann Romney praises husband

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney swept to the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday night, praised lovingly by his wife from their national convention stage as the "man American needs" and cheered by delegates eager to propel him into the fall campaign against President Barack Obama.
The hall erupted in cheers when Romney strolled on stage and shared a hug and kiss with his wife of more than 40 years.
"This man will not fail. This man will not let us down," Mrs. Romney said in a prime-time speech that sounded at times like a heart-to-heart talk among women and at times like a testimonial to her husband's little-known softer side.
"It's the moms who always have to work harder, to make everything right," she said. And she vouched firmly for her husband, who lags behind Obama in surveys among women voters: "You can trust Mitt. He loves America."
Earlier, the Romneys watched on television at a hotel suite across the street from the convention hall as delegates sealed his hard-won victories in the primaries and caucuses of last winter. They ended the evening together in a VIP box just above the convention floor.
To send Romney and ticketmate Paul Ryan into the fall campaign, the convention quickly approved a conservative platform that calls for tax cuts — not government spending — to stimulate the economy at a time of sluggish growth and 8.3 percent unemployment.
Republican mockery of Obama began almost instantly from the podium at a convention postponed once and dogged still by Hurricane Isaac. The Democratic president has "never run a company. He hasn't even run a garage sale or seen the inside of a lemonade stand," declared Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican Party.
More than eight hours in length, the session inside the Republicans' red-white-and-blue-themed convention hall passed up no opportunity to broaden Romney's appeal. Speakers included Hispanic candidates for office; former Rep. Artur Davis, a one-time Democrat and member of the Congressional Black Caucus; businessmen and women and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Romney's most persistent, conservative nemesis in the nominating campaign.

Hurricane Isaac 2012 path

Isaac to hit Louisiana, Mississippi; tropical storm threatens flooding, high winds inland

Louisiana and Mississippi, including areas like New Orleans and the coast ravaged seven years ago by Hurricane Katrina, won't get off easy on Tropical Storm Isaac, forecasters say. It is on the verge of becoming Hurricane Isaac 2012, and it will strengthen before making landfall.

Hurricane Isaac 2012 path

 Hurricane Isaac 2012 path

Though it appeared early today to perhaps make landfall as a low-level Category 1 storm, the latest forecast updates reveal with a high degree of confidence that the storm make landfall in Louisiana, possibly as a strong Category 2, before tracking across New Orleans and into Mississippi.

And, while coastal areas including the Mississippi coast still recovering in some respects from Katrina and New Orleans are expected to take a heavy blow from Hurricane Isaac, inland areas like Jackson and Shreveport should be on high alert. The storm may stall after it makes land late Tuesday or early Wednesday, pummeling the region with high winds and heavy rains, forecasters said.
With its massive size and ponderous movement, a strengthening Isaac could become a punishing rain machine depending on its power, speed and where it comes ashore along the Gulf Coast.
The focus has been on New Orleans as Isaac takes dead aim at the city seven years after Hurricane Katrina, but the impact will be felt well beyond the city limits. The storm's winds could be felt more than 200 miles from the storm's center.
The Gulf Coast region has been saturated thanks to a wet summer, and some officials have worried more rain could make it easy for trees and power lines to fall over in the wet ground. Too much water also could flood crops, and wind could topple plants like corn and cotton.
"A large, slow-moving system is going to pose a lot of problems — winds, flooding, storm surge and even potentially down the road river flooding," said Richard Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. "That could happen for days after the event."
The storm's potential for destruction was not lost on Alabama farmer Bert Driskell, who raises peanuts, cotton, wheat, cattle and sod on several thousand acres near Grand Bay, in Mobile County.

earthquakes rattles San Diego area

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Dozens of small to moderate earthquakes struck southeastern California on Sunday, knocking trailer homes off their foundations, shattering windows and rattling nerves in a small farming town east of San Diego.
The largest quake, at 1:57 p.m., registered at a magnitude 5.5 and was centered about three miles northwest of the town of Brawley, said Robert Graves, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. Another quake about an hour and a half earlier registered at magnitude 5.3.
No injuries were reported.
More than 30 additional earthquakes with magnitudes of at least 3.5 jiggled the same area near the southern end of the Salton Sea, Graves said.
"The type of activity that we're seeing could possibly continue for several hours or even days," Graves said.
The quakes pushed 20 mobile homes at a trailer park off their foundations, displacing the families that lived in them, said Maria Peinado, a spokeswoman for the Imperial County Emergency Operations Center.
Sporadic power outages affecting 2,500 Imperial Irrigation District customers also prompted authorities to evacuate some patients from one of the county's two hospitals.
At the El Sol Market in Brawley, food packages fell from shelves and littered the aisles.
Several glasses and a bottle of wine crashed to the floor and shattered at Assaggio, an Italian restaurant in Brawley, said owner Jerry Ma. The shaking was short-lived but intense, he said.
"It felt like there was quake every 15 minutes. One after another. My kids are small and they're scared and don't want to come back inside," said Mike Patel, who manages Townhouse Inn & Suites in Brawley.
A TV came crashing down and a few light fixtures broke inside the motel, Patel said.
A Brawley police dispatcher said several downtown buildings sustained minor damage.
The first quake, with a magnitude of 3.9, occurred at 10:02 a.m. The USGS said more than 100 aftershocks struck the same approximate epicenter, about 16 miles north of El Centro.
Some shaking was felt along the San Diego County coast in Del Mar, some 120 miles from the epicenter, as well as in the Coachella Valley, southern Orange County and parts of northern Mexico.
USGS seismologist Lucy Jones said earthquake swarms are characteristic of the region, known as the Brawley Seismic Zone.
"The area sees lots of events at once, with many close to the largest magnitude, rather than one main shock with several much smaller aftershocks," Jones said.
The last major swarm was in 2005, following a magnitude-5.1 quake, she said.
Sunday's quake cluster occurred in what scientists call a transition zone between the Imperial and San Andreas faults, so they weren't assigning the earthquakes to either fault, Graves said.

600 Million in India Lose Power

India suffered its second huge, crippling power failure in two days Tuesday, depriving as much as half of the vast country, up to 600 million people, of electricity and disrupting transport networks for several hours.
The first power grid collapse, on Monday, was the country's worst blackout in a decade. It affected seven states in northern India that are home to more than 350 million people.
But Tuesday's failure was even larger, hitting eastern and northeastern areas as well. Both blackouts cut power in the Indian capital, New Delhi, and left people sweltering in high heat and humidity.
Power was largely restored as of 9:30 p.m., several hours after the affected electricity grids collapsed, the Power Grid Corporation of India reported on its website.

The New York Times reports that Tuesday afternoon’s outage is the largest outage ever on record, effecting the equivalent of most of Europe’s population or more than the population on North and Central America combined.
India’s power minister hasn’t specified the root cause of the problem, though he says there are problems with the country’s power grid. Some are speculating that states are using more power than the grid can handle, causing the outage.
Sporadic power outages are the norm in most of India, where local power supplies regularly cut out for several hours a day.

Solar eclipse and ring of fire may 20 2012 http://ping.fm/QvnCJ

Latest Breaking News Daily: solar eclipse and ring of fire may 20 2012

Special solar eclipse glasses have sold out at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

The city-run observatory is one of the few local places known to sell eclipse glasses, but its stock of 2,500 pairs ran out late Friday night, spokeswoman Susa Szotyori said.

"The glasses are completely gone," Szotyori said. She said the observatory's gift shop had fully expected to have plenty of glasses, which sold for $2.99 each, available through the Sunday eclipse. "They're equally stunned as everyone," she said.

One group in Japan is broadcasting live its ascent of Mt. Fuji to photograph the once-in-a-generation event.

Mt. Fuji, the highest point in Japan, is directly under the full path of the annular eclipse -- one in which the moon blots out all but the sun's outer edge, blocking all sunlight except for a "ring of fire." ("Annular" means "ring" in Latin.)

Solar Eclipse and ring of fire may 20 2012

Astronomers from across the U.S. are flocking to Albuquerque just to take in the solar eclipse, but for thousands of amateurs here are some tips to help you enjoy the event known as the 'ring of fire'. "The disk of the moon is smaller than the disk of the sun so for our location here in Albuquerque, we'll see a perfect ring around the moon," said Dee Friesen President of the Albuquerque Astronomical Society.
Friesen explained he's had hundreds of astronomers RSVP to viewing events and they are from all over the nation. Thousands of people are also flocking to the city just to watch.
One man KRQE News 13 spoke to says he drove 16 hours from Texas just to catch a glimpse.
Onlookers will have to be careful. Looking at direct sunlight, especially when it's intensified by an eclipse can scorch your retina. Retinas don't have pain receptors so damage sets in quickly.

The eclipse starts at 6:30 p.m. Sunday and peaks at 7:33 p.m.
Bernalillo County expects about 3,000 people at it's event at Mesa Del Sol. The will also be teaching kids how to build pinhole cameras and there will be movie screens set up for every to view the eclipse without glasses.
"We have 2,000 pairs of glasses, and we're going to start giving those out about 4 p.m., so if you want some you better get here a little early," Commissioner Wayne Johnson.
Viewers can use welder's goggles but they must be rated 14 or higher. There have also been tint shops selling window tint to make glasses, but not all of them are safe. The tests is, if you hold up the tint to a light bright bulb and you can see the bulb, the tint is not dark enough.
Officials are also discouraging people from going to the top Sandia Crest to watch eclipse. They are worried about parking and fire issues.

Will Smith slaps reporter who tries to kiss him

Don't get fresh with the Prince of Bel-Air.

Will Smith gave a backhanded slap to a Ukranian reporter Friday after the man planted a surprise smooch near the actor's lips at the "Men in Black 3" premier in Moscow, TMZ.com reported.

"Come on man. What the hell is your problem buddy?" Smith snapped when the back-patting hug turned into a kamikaze kiss attack.

After a forceful shove, the "Ali" star ended the encounter with his left hand smacking the young man's cheek.

"Sorry. He kissed me on my mouth," Smith said as he continued down the red carpet with cameras rolling.

"The joker is lucky I didn't sucker punch him," he quipped.

"I'm so sorry," one of his shocked female handlers said.

"No, no. It's all good," Smith said with a laugh as he moved on to the next interview.

SOLAR FlARE STORM WARNING May 11 2012

SOLAR ACTIVITY: Huge sunspot AR1476 is crackling with M-class solar flares and appears to be on the verge of producing something even stronger. The sunspot's 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field harbors energy for X-class flares, the most powerful kind. Earth is entering the line of fire as the sunspot rotates across the face of the sun.
On May 10th around 0418 UT, sunspot 1476 unleashed an impulsive M5-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash:
The almost-X class explosion did not hurl a significant CME toward Earth. NOAA forecasters estimate a 75% chance of more M-class flares and a 20% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours.

About The End of the World 2012: 2012 End of World - About The Prophecy - Society - Environment

Time after time, we have now encountered various prophecies which have been revealed. For about so many centuries from now, it had been then discovered that there is an accurate calendar that will be able to calculate when is the end of everything that exists here on earth. As per the Mayans prediction there will be an end to everything and that is nowadays the talk of the town, the 2012 end of world.|As per the Mayans prediction there will be an end to everything as well as the 2012 end of world has become the talk of the town.}

Some are wondering why Mayan's have the ability to predict such events in the future. The reason for this is that centuries ago, in the case of astronomy, math as well as art, Mayan's were recognized to be a great advancement. They even have a complete written language, and because they've got such knowledge at hand, they became preoccupied with time and began on devising a calendar that is particular enough to tell what happens in the future. It showed more precise prediction of events in the future since the calendar is based on planetary, lunar and solar activities.

You will find some instances that prophecies based on the calendar itself showed that it did happened in the future like for example the arrival of the known Cortez (Spanish explorer) and other adventurers who accompanies him in New World at Tobaco shores. Then there was also the best important among all prediction which has to do with the alignment of Earth to our Sun that's more often known as the cosmic alignment that happens every 25,800 years.

Octopus eats seagull

The Giant Pacific Octopus can be seen regularly patrolling the shallows of the shorelines around Victoria. They primarily feed on crustaceans, but are known to occasionally take fish and even birds. Octopi are extremely intelligent animals, and great problem solvers. Although they live only about four years, they can grow to have a span of more than 20 feet and to weigh more than 100 pounds. This one wasn’t that large, but it was still an impressive individual. What was even more impressive, though, was that it had one of its tentacles wrapped around the head of the gull, holding it under water.

Mother's Day Gift For Your Wife With less than a month to go before Mother's Day it's high time you started thinking about getting the mother of your children a beautiful gift to show your appreciation and love for her. If you don't think about it now you'll end up buying her an overpriced box of chocolates and bunch of hybrid flowers from the 7/11 thereby failing on two accounts: 1, to remember the day and 2, to come up with anything but a very run-of-the-mill, production line item that is not going to express what you might want to! The mother of your children is unique and she does a fantastic and difficult job bringing up your children- her Mother's Day gift must reflect this and it must arrive in a timely fashion. So, what to do about this? Workers demand pay hikes at Asia's May Day marches

May Day moved beyond its roots as an international workers' holiday to a day of international protest Tuesday, with rallies throughout Asia demanding wage increases and marches planned across Europe over government-imposed austerity measures.
Europeans will take to the streets to protest against the measures that are being blamed for a big increase in the number of unemployed, particularly in Spain where one in four people is out of work.
In the United States, demonstrations, strikes and acts of civil disobedience are planned, including what could be the country's most visible Occupy rallies since the anti-Wall Street encampments came down in the fall.
In Asia, thousands of May Day protesters in the Philippines, Malaysia and Taiwan demanded hikes in pay that they say has not kept up with rising consumer prices, while also calling for lower school fees and expressing a variety of other gripes.
In Moscow, around 100,000 people — including President Dmitry Medvedev and president-elect Vladimir Putin — took part in the main march through the city center.
Television images showed the two leaders happily chatting with participants on the clear-and-cool spring day.
Many banners and placards criticized the opposition movement that has become more prominent in Moscow over the past half-year. One read "spring has come, the swamp has dried up," referring to Bolotnaya (Swampy) Square, the site of some of the largest opposition demonstrations of recent months.
In Asia, the push for wage increases was a common theme.
"It is always the case that low-income groups across Asia feel a disproportionately larger impact of rising prices," said Wai Ho Leong, a Singapore-based economist with Barclays Capital. "Coupled with rising inflation expectations, the case is building to do more for lower income (workers). Minimum wages are one way."
In the Philippine capital, Manila, about 8,000 members of a huge labor alliance, many clad in red shirts and waving red streamers, marched under a brutal sun for 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to the heavily barricaded Mendiola bridge near the Malacanang presidential palace, which teemed with thousands of riot police, Manila police chief Alex Gutierrez said.
Philippine President Benigno Aquino III rejected their calls for a $3 daily pay hike, which he warned could worsen inflation, spark layoffs and turn away foreign investors.
Aside from pay hikes, protest leader Josua Mata from the Alliance of Progressive Labor urged Aquino to back proposed legislation against the widespread practices by businesses of contracting out certain operations to other companies to save on costs and preventing workers from organizing trade unions.
In Taiwan, several thousand anti-government protesters marched through downtown Taipei, demanding higher wages, lower school tuition and better conditions for foreign workers.
In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, some 500 people rallied, calling for a higher minimum wage than the one announced Monday by Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Najib's plan for the country's first-ever minimum wage calls for minimum monthly pay of 900 ringgit ($297) for private-sector workers in peninsula Malaysia and 800 ringgit ($264) in two poor eastern states. The move is expected to benefit 3.2 million low-income workers, who account for about a third of the country's work force.
The protesters marched from a market to the headquarters of Maybank, the nation's largest bank, calling for a minimum monthly wage of 1,500 ringgit ($496) a month.

Europe global May Day labour protests

Labour demonstrations marking May Day are taking place across the world, with the main focus on Europe and its backdrop of unpopular austerity measures and rising social unrest.
Greece, Spain and Portugal are set to hold large nationwide demonstrations.
At a Paris rally, National Front leader Marine Le Pen is expected to tell her supporters who they should vote for in Sunday's presidential run-off vote.
The Occupy protest movement has urged May Day action spanning the globe.
'Real work' Anti-austerity protesters will take part in a day of strikes and demonstrations across Greece.
The BBC's Mark Lowen in Athens says the 1 May protests there have become an institution, with public and private sector strikes and disruption to public transport.
But he says there may be less of the traditional violence, since minds are focused on Sunday's general election, when many Greeks are expected to vent their anger against the austerity measures.

Elections on Sunday are also the main focus in France.
Ms Le Pen will lead a march in Paris to the statue of Joan of Arc, an iconic figure for the far right.
She has promised to indicate where the 6.5m voters who supported her in the first round of the presidential election should cast their votes on Sunday, in the crucial second round between President Nicolas Sarkozy and the Socialist candidate Francois Hollande.
The BBC's Gavin Hewitt says the expectation is that she will advise them to abstain.
Mr Sarkozy will rally in Trocadero Square, while French unions march to the Bastille.
Mr Sarkozy has dubbed his rally a showcase of "real work".
Mr Hollande said Mr Sarkozy was more the president of "real unemployment".
The main May Day rally in Spain is expected to get under way in Madrid at about 10:00 GMT, while Portugal's labour unions will rally in the afternoon.
In Russia, nationalists, communists and opponents of incoming president Vladimir Putin are all holding separate rallies.
Mr Putin and outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev made a rare joint public appearance on the streets of Moscow, leading more than 100,000 people in a Soviet-style "Holiday of Labour and Spring" march.

May Day protests planned, may disrupt commutes

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — May Day protests may disrupt the morning commute in major U.S. cities Tuesday as labor, immigration and Occupy activists rally support on the international workers' holiday.
Demonstrations, strikes and acts of civil disobedience are being planned around the country, including the most visible organizing effort by anti-Wall Street groups since Occupy encampments came down in the fall.
While protesters are backing away from a call to block San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, bridge district ferry workers said they'll strike Tuesday morning to shut down ferry service, which brings commuters from Marin County to the city. Ferry workers have been in contract negotiations for a year and have been working without a contract since July 2011 in a dispute over health care coverage, the Inlandboatmen's Union said.
A coalition of bridge and bus workers said they will honor the picket line, which may target an area near the bridge's toll plaza. Occupy activists from San Francisco and Oakland are expected to join the rally.
"We ask supporters to stand with us at strike picket lines on May Day and to keep the bridge open," said Alex Tonisson, an organizer and co-chair of the Golden Gate Bridge Labor Coalition.
In anticipation of the strike, the agency that operates the Golden Gate Bridge and related public transportation systems canceled Tuesday's morning ferries from Marin County to San Francisco and urged regular riders to make alternate travel plans.
Police say they are working with other area law enforcement agencies and have a plan in place for potential disruptions. They would not discuss specifics.
Across the bay in Oakland, where police and Occupy protesters have often clashed, officers are preparing for a long day as hundreds of "General Strike" signs have sprouted across town.
In New York City, where the first Occupy camp was set up and where large protests brought some of the earliest attention — and mass arrests — to the movement, leaders plan a variety of events, including picketing, a march through Manhattan and other "creative disruptions against the corporations who rule our city."
Organizers have called for protesters to block one or more bridges or tunnels connecting Manhattan, the city's economic engine, to New Jersey and other parts of the city.
The Occupy movement began in September with a small camp in a lower Manhattan plaza that quickly grew to include hundreds of protesters using the tent city as their home base. More than 700 people were arrested Oct. 1 as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge.
The city broke the camp up in November, citing sanitary and other concerns, but the movement has held smaller events and protests periodically since then.
Elsewhere on the West Coast, Occupy Seattle has called for people to rally at a park near downtown Tuesday. Mayor Mike McGinn has warned residents there could be traffic delays and has said city officials have evidence — including graffiti and posters — that some groups plan to "commit violence, damage property and disrupt peaceful free speech activity."
In Los Angeles, Occupy is organizing a daylong "people's power and bike caravan" that will start from the four cardinal directions around the city in the morning, converging on downtown LA's financial district in the mid afternoon for an approximately 90-minute protest. The themes of the marches are foreclosures and police brutality.
In a website statement, Occupy LA promised the event will be "city-paralyzing" and "carnivalesque" with en route actions including a food giveaway in a South Los Angeles park, and mini-rallies outside the Veterans' Affairs and Bank of America buildings in West Los Angeles.

May 1 protests actions are planned across the country

NEW YORK, May 1 (Reuters) - Occupy Wall Street vows a day of demonstrations in New York and across the United States on Tuesday, in a crucial test of its staying power some eight months after emerging as a movement against corporate greed and economic inequality.
The "99 Percent" populist movement, which began as a 24-hour encampment in lower Manhattan last fall and spread to cities across the country, will join organized labor for a day of May 1 protests, in what it has called a "day without the 99 percent."
Dozens of actions are planned across the country, though there is some skepticism over how many people will turn out and whether it will spell Occupy's resurgence. The event was first billed as a "General Strike," but organized labor declined to sign on to that call.
Inspired by the pro-democracy Arab Spring, the Wall Street protesters last year targeted U.S. financial policies they blamed for the yawning income gap between rich and poor - between what they called the 1 percent and the 99 percent.
But since last fall, when scores of demonstrators set up a vigil in lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park and Occupy boasted it had $500,000 in the bank, donations have slowed to a point where Occupy was left in a cash crunch earlier this year.
There is also evidence of media fatigue, with mentions of the term "Occupy Wall Street" down 75 percent this month compared to late last year. So far in April, the term has appeared in 4,323 articles, according to the Factiva data base. Last October, the same search yielded 17,327 references.
Chris Hedges, a former journalist and one-time vocal supporter of Occupy Wall Street, said the movement has been plagued with internal problems since it swelled in size. He said he did not expect May Day to "resurrect the movement."
"If you look closely at movements, they don't follow a sort of straight trajectory upwards. They stumble, fall, have reverses - sometimes, they're crushed," he said. But Hedges cautioned that writing off Occupy based on the success of May Day would be "short-sighted."
Occupy Oakland has called for protesters to "occupy" the Golden Gate Bridge in a show of solidarity with bridge workers who are engaged in a contract dispute over wages and benefits. In New York, protesters plan to set up a "pop-up encampment" in midtown's Bryant Park and then join organized labor for a permitted march starting at Union Square.
Some in New York have vowed to disrupt commuter traffic, but Occupy said it would have no involvement in that.

North Korea Makes Threats Against US and South Korea

North Korea Makes Threats Against US and South Korea

A powerful North Korean military leader has made some harsh comments against the US and South Korea. The statements come just a short few weeks after their launch-test missile failed in front of the world’s media. KTVU has more details.

“North Korea has some threatening words for the US this morning, a senior North Korean army official says his country is armed with powerful mobile weapons that are capable of striking the US.”

The threats made against the US come as North Korea’s army celebrates their 80th anniversary today, April 25th. Fox News addressed the cause of North Korea’s threatening statements, speaking to Jim Walsh - an international security expert from MIT, who believe their motives don’t seem out of the ordinary.

“It fits the pattern of history. In the past they have had a missile test followed by a nuclear test. That missile test did not go well so this is a way for them to recoup and save some face.”

A writer for The Chrisitan Science Monitor says the new military leader for North Korea needs to convince the population that he has control. They spoke to Mark Fitzpatrick, a former US State Department official, for his expertise.

“'Yet another issue is the need to convince the North Korean people that Kim Jong-un is a strong leader, capable of controlling a military establishment ... while solidifying his power over the country. Having failed on the missile, they’ve got to do something that goes boom,' says Fitzpatrick.”

The ongoing political disputes between the North and South are flaring with the military threats. The Chosunilbo, a South Korean news publication, agrees that the motive is an attempt to save face.

“Every time it becomes more isolated, North Korea typically steps up its threats…The regime is probably trying to regain face by turning aggressively on South Korea. Although the threats may sound like emotional blather, Seoul needs to be fully prepared to deal with any provocations, and if the North does act on its words, it must respond in such a way as to stop North Korea ever thinking of doing it again.”

The Korean Herald reported that the threats could actually be real after speaking to World North Korea Research Center director Ahn Chan-il.

“(North Korea) always conducts attacks under unpredictable circumstances, so an attack is entirely possible.”

Since the military threats from North Korea increased, the Obama administration has chosen to halt food aid to the country. The Chosunilbo says even China agreed to the UN’s Security Council condemnation.

Latest Solar Flare Activity: Report of latest solar flare activity April 26 2012

A long lasting Geomagnetic Storm that reached very close to the Strong G3 Level took place Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Visible Aurora was seen in many locations and Ham Radio operators were able to make numerous contacts via the Aurora on the 6 meter (50mhz) amateur radio band. This storm was due to a sharply south pointing component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) that allowed the solar wind to flow in and generate aurora. Things are now starting to return to quieter levels.

UPDATE: Minor Geomagnetic Storm conditions (Kp=5) did again flare up on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The solar wind is currently near 500 km/s. Be on the lookout for Aurora at very high latitudes.

Updated 4/26/2012 @ 13:40 UTC
Solar Update
Solar activity is currently at very low levels. Sunspot 1460 just rotated onto the western limb and out of direct Earth view. Sunspot 1459 which continues to decay, will also join 1460 on the limb by the weekend. Elsewhere, Sunspot 1465 did have a Beta-Gamma-Delta magnetic configuration, but has itself decayed and is no longer a threat for strong solar flares. There will continue to be a chance for C-Class flares.

C-Class Flare and CME
A couple of new sunspots are rotating into view off the eastern limb. One of these regions located off the northeast limb produced a C3.7 Solar Flare at 07:45 UTC this morning and was associated with a Type II Sweep Frequency Event and CME. Due to the spots location, the plasma cloud should be directed mostly towards the east.

ALERT: Type II Radio Emission
Begin Time: 2012 Apr 24 0748 UTC
Estimated Velocity: 1029 km/s
Description: Type II emissions occur in association with eruptions on the sun and typically indicate a coronal mass ejection is associated with a flare event.

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 22/2100Z
to 23/2100Z: Solar activity has been at low levels for the past 24
hours. There are currently 8 active regions on the disk, with 5
regions having sunspots. The spotted regions on the disk all
remained rather quiet and stable throughout the period. However,
around plage Region 1461 (N10W19), two C-class events were observed
today with associated Earth directed CMEs.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be at
low levels with a chance for M-class x-ray events for the next three
days (24 - 26 April).

South Korea 'On Alert' for Possible North Korea Attack

Police say they have increased patrols around headquarters of nine conservative media outlets in Seoul after North Korea vowed to soon carry out a "special military action" on them by "unprecedented means and methods."

South Korea's government says it is concerned about Pyongyang's threat to reduce to ashes, in several minutes, the support base for the country's president, including several broadcasters and a leading daily newspaper, the Dong-a Ilbo.

Foreign ministry spokesman Cho Byung-je characterizes the latest threat from Pyongyang as “very dangerous and harsh.”

Cho says South Korea's government and military are strengthening their security postures and are on alert to prepare for any situation. He also warns that any military provocation by North Korea will be answered with a punishment by the South.

At the defense ministry, spokesman Kim Min-suk tells reporters he can say little about the possibility of fresh provocations by North Korea.

Kim says South Korean forces are monitoring the North's military but he cannot elaborate.

Officials in the South Korean government say there are no reports of any unusual military movements in the North.

That has led to speculation that the unique assault North Korea's military vows to carry out against the South could be nontraditional, such as cyber attacks on the government and media.

Kim Hung-kwang, who was a computer science professor at a North Korean university - and now heads a defectors' intellectual group - says Pyongyang has a proven capability for distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks via the Internet.

Kim says he anticipates North Korea will attempt something much more paralyzing than those previous attacks, such as taking down South Korean government internal computer systems. And as far as an attack on the South Korean media, he says, based on Monday's declared threat by Pyongyang, it will be something unexpected and unprecedented.

Tension has been high on the Korean peninsula since the sinking of a South Korean naval ship in the Yellow Sea and the shelling of one of its frontier islands in 2010.

North Korea has denied any involvement in the first incident but acknowledged the second attack, saying it was responding to the South's provocative military exercise in disputed waters.

The North has a long history of terrorist attacks against the South, including attempts to assassinate South Korean presidents.

In recent days Pyongyang's state media reported North Koreans rallied in the streets to demand South Korean president Lee Myung-bak be killed.

North Korea has accused Lee of the “unforgivable sin” of insulting the country while mourning was under way for its late leader, Kim Jong Il and then celebrating, this month, the centennial of the birth of the nation's founder, Kim Il Sung.

Latest Solar Flare Activity: Todays Solar Flare Activity April 23 2012 Causing Geomagnetic Storm Aurora

Aurora Watch / G1 Geomagnetic Storm
A incoming CME shock swept past our planet at 03:25 UTC. A geomagnetic sudden impulse of 31 nT was detected by the Boulder, Colorado magnetometer. The ACE Spacecraft did show a solar wind increase to near 400 km/s. Only minor geomagnetic activity resulted at very high latitudes.
Update: A Minor Geomagnetic Storm (Kp=5) is now in progress at high latitudes. This is due to a south tilting component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field combined with an elevated solar wind speed. Be on the lookout for Aurora if it is dark outside.

420 meaning 4 20 April 20 2012

420, 4:20 or 4/20 (pronounced four-twenty) refers to consumption of cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis subculture. The notable day for these is April 20

What does 420 friendly mean? What is 420 friendly definition 420 friendly can easily be summed up in one sentence. Well…actually a few sentences. Obviously if you know what the number “420” means then you can figure out the rest. The definition of 420 is slang for marijuana. Click here to check out the origin and the definition of 420. Let’s start this again, “420” is code word for marijuana and the word “friendly” obviously means cordial. Put them together and you have the definition for 420 friendly.

April 20 4/20 in U.S. has evolved into a counterculture holiday, where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis Some events have a political nature to them, advocating for the decriminalization of non-medical cannabis in the United States

A large celebration is held every year on the University of Colorado's Boulder campus, with attendance reaching more than 11,000 in 2008. It has been estimated that in 2009 the crowd surpassed the 10,000 attendee mark that was set in 2008. This would make CU Boulder's celebration of the hopeful legalization of marijuana one of the largest such celebrations in the United States. University police have tried various methods to prevent the gathering, including photographing students participating in the event, but the crowd has grown every year. The university and police have taken a more hands-off approach since 2006, emphasizing event safety over possession citations. Recent growth of the medical marijuana industry in Colorado is expected to add momentum to future events.

On April 15, 2009, the Office of the Chancellor sent an e-mail to all CU students regarding the 2009 celebration of 4/20 stating that the event would debase "the reputation of your university and degree." The CU student newspaper disagreed with the Chancellor's analysis

NASA says all signs go for first private flight to space station spacex

A private spaceship mission to the International Space Station is on track for a planned April 30 launch, which will mark a historic first for the orbiting laboratory, NASA officials announced today (April 16).

A private spaceship mission to the International Space Station is on track for a planned April 30 launch, which will mark a historic first for the orbiting laboratory, NASA officials announced April 16.
The launch will kick off a pivotal demonstration flight for the unmanned Dragon capsule built by the company Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) of Hawthorne, Calif. During the mission, the gumdrop-shaped spacecraft will rendezvous with the space station, be captured by astronauts operating a robotic arm and offload some cargo.
If successful, it will be the first time a commercial American robotic spacecraft has ever flown to the International Space Station.
NASA space station managers and SpaceX officials met earlier today to review the Dragon spacecraft's readiness for its debut trip to the orbiting lab. They said the capsule is on track to blast off in two weeks, but only if a few remaining issues are resolved.
